Neon Drift 2049 review: the arcade racer is back

One move, 42 tracks and a city that glows. The most fun we have had in a racing game for years.

Arcade racing games almost disappeared. For ten years the genre gave us simulators with tyre-pressure menus and open worlds with 400 map icons. Neon Drift 2049 does not care about either. It gives you a fast car, a wet road and a city that glows, and it asks one thing: do not lift your foot.

We played it for 31 hours on PC and on console. It is the most fun we have had in a racing game for a very long time.

Every car in the game is invented, and every one of them looks fast while it stands still.

What kind of game is it?

Neon Drift 2049 is a racer built around one move. You tap the brake, turn in and hold a slide for as long as you dare. The longer the slide, the more boost you earn. Boost makes you faster, which makes the next corner harder, which earns more boost. The whole game is that loop, and the loop is excellent.

The handling is simple to learn. After ten minutes, you can hold a drift through a long bend. After ten hours, you start to link corners together, and a full lap becomes one long slide with short bursts of boost between the walls. It feels like a rhythm game with a steering wheel.

There are 42 tracks across six districts of the city of Halcyon. Each district has its own surface, its own traffic and its own weather. The harbour is wide and fast. The old town is narrow, with tram lines that pull your tyres. The Skyline district is a set of glass bridges 300 metres above the street, and it has no barriers at all.

The career

The career takes about 18 hours. You start as a courier and end as the champion of the Halcyon league. The story is thin, and the game knows it. Cut-scenes are 20 seconds long and you can skip each one.

What keeps you playing is the structure. Each event has three goals: finish, beat a rival's time and complete one special task, such as a full lap without touching a wall. You need only the first goal to continue. The second and third goals unlock parts and new paint. We never had to repeat a race to make progress, and we repeated dozens because we wanted the third star.

We wanted a game where a bad lap is over in 90 seconds and the restart takes one.

Restarts are instant. There is no loading screen between a crash and the start line. This small thing changes how you play. You take risks, because a mistake costs nothing.

Rivals and online play

The computer drivers are fast and fair. They make mistakes under pressure, they defend the inside line, and they do not slow down to let you catch up. On the highest of the four difficulty levels, the final league took us nine attempts.

Online races hold 12 players. In two weeks after launch, we found a full lobby in under 30 seconds at every hour we tried. Ranked play sorts you into seven tiers. There is also a ghost mode: you race the recorded laps of friends and of the top 100 players on each track. This is where we spent most of our time after the career ended.

A steering wheel works, but the game is tuned for a controller.

Performance

On the console, the game runs at 60 frames per second in its quality mode and 120 in its performance mode. We saw no drops in either, even with 12 cars and heavy rain. On a mid-range PC with a three-year-old graphics card, we held 90 frames per second at 1440p with high settings.

Loading a track takes four seconds. The game is 38 GB, which is small for 2026.

What is not so good

The soundtrack has 34 songs and at least ten of them are very similar. After 20 hours we turned the music down and played our own.

The car list is short. There are 28 cars, and several are the same body with a different engine. Each car does handle in its own way, so the number did not hurt much, but players who like to collect will finish early.

There is also no split-screen mode. A game this easy to pick up would be perfect for two people on one sofa. The studio says it is "looking at it" for a later update.

💡
Turn off the racing line in the options after the first hour. The tracks are readable without it, and you will learn them much faster.

Verdict

Neon Drift 2049 knows what it is. It is fast, it is pretty, and it respects your time. A thin story, a repeating soundtrack and a missing split-screen mode keep it from a nine. If you ever loved an arcade racer, buy it this weekend.

How long is the game?

The career takes about 18 hours. Reaching three stars on every event took us 31 hours.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. The career, time trials and ghosts you already downloaded work offline.

Is there cross-play?

Yes. PC and console players race in the same lobbies, and you can turn this off.
